Manchester United ‘will sack Erik ten Hag as head coach at end of season’

Manchester United make the decision to sack Erik ten Hag as head coach once the 2023-24 campaign has finished.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United have reportedly made the decision to sack Erik ten Hag as head coach once the 2023-24 campaign has concluded.

The 54-year-old has a contract at Old Trafford until next June, but there is currently widespread speculation surrounding his future due to the team’s struggles this season.

Man United, who suffered a 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday evening, are eighth in the Premier League table and face missing out on European football for the 2024-25 campaign.

However, the Red Devils can still end the season with domestic silverware, with Manchester City their opponents in the final of the FA Cup on May 25.

A recent report claimed that Man United, who still have league games against Arsenal, Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion to come before the end of the campaign, will not be sacking Ten Hag ahead of the FA Cup final.

However, according to Football Insider, a decision has been made to relieve him of his duties at the end of the season.

The report claims that even a win against Man City in the FA Cup final would not see the Dutchman keep hold of his managerial position heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Ten Hag took charge of Man United in the summer of 2022, arriving at Old Trafford off the back of winning three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups while in charge of Ajax.

The Dutchman has won 63, drawn 17 and lost 30 of his 110 matches since arriving at Man United, boasting a win record of just over 57%.

Ten Hag led the Red Devils to the EFL Cup trophy last season, in addition to securing a third-placed finish in the Premier League table and making the final of the FA Cup.

However, it has been a struggle for Man United this season, and Ten Hag was critical of his players for their effort levels against Palace on Monday, with the team suffering a 4-0 defeat.

“It is clear and it is obvious, this is underperforming. We didn’t act how we want to do it and it’s by far not good enough. We are very disappointed, but the fans were always behind us and we keep fighting, like the fans did. I was really grateful [to the fans]. They back us,” he told reporters after the match.

“They see also we have our problems. You have to stick together. You have to take responsibility. The fans gave us such huge and tremendous support. As Manchester United, we should perform better. The players who were available should do better. It’s a deserved defeat.

“The performance wasn’t what we expected. There are always reasons [why we are not good enough]. Everyone can see our backline, there we have huge problems but, at the end of the day, we have to deal with it. We should have done better than we did.”

Bayern Munich are believed to have registered their interest in appointing Ten Hag as their new manager, with Thomas Tuchel potentially moving in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.
