Arsenal, Chelsea-linked striker leaves door open to summer transfer

Sporting Lisbon striker Victor Gyokeres appears to leave the door open to a summer exit amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres has refused to rule out a summer departure amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Last season, Gyokeres scored 21 league goals for Coventry City to finish the campaign as the Championship’s second-highest scorer and earn a move to Sporting.

Gyokeres has gone on to enjoy a remarkable maiden season with the Portuguese giants, racking up 41 goals in 47 competitive matches.

The Sweden international has netted 27 of those goals in 31 league games, including five in his last three appearances.

Gyokeres scored a late goal in Sunday’s home clash with Portimonense to wrap up a dominant 3-0 victory, which ultimately proved enough to clinch the Primeira Liga title following Benfica’s defeat to Famalicao.

Gyokeres refuses to rule out summer departure

Despite firing Sporting to their 20th league title, Gyokeres is facing an uncertain future amid links with a potential move to the Premier League.

Sporting are keen to retain Gyokeres’s services, but they may have to fend off interest from London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

Gyokeres has now opened the door to a summer exit after refusing to offer any guarantees that he will still be a Sporting player next term.

The 25-year-old told A Bola: “Stay next season? It’s football, it’s normal, I can’t promise anything. I really like being here, but in football everything happens very fast and we have to adapt. I can’t make so many predictions, it’s difficult, there are still games this season, then we’ll see.”

How much will Gyokeres cost?

According to the Metro, Sporting are only willing to part ways with Gyokeres’ if his €100m (£86m) release clause is paid in full.

There has also been a suggestion that Sporting are looking to increase the player’s release clause to €120m (£103m) in anticipation of a potential summer bidding war.

In addition to interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, Gyokeres is said to be a possible target for 20-time English champions Manchester United.

Liverpool are also in the race to secure Gyokeres’s signature after recently sending scouts to watch the striker in action.
