Jarrod Bowen emulates Geoff Hurst, Paolo Di Canio scoring feats with Liverpool goal

Jarrod Bowen emulates two separate scoring feats of Geoff Hurst and Paolo Di Canio after netting in West Ham United’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Jarrod Bowen has followed in the footsteps of Geoff Hurst and Paolo Di Canio after scoring in West Ham United‘s 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 27-year-old is the Hammers’ top scorer in all competitions this season and increased his goal tally to 20 with a first-half opener against the Reds.

Just moments after having a curling strike tipped wide by Alisson Becker, Bowen was allowed space to rise unmarked and meet an outswinging corner, directing his header into the far corner to put West Ham in front three minutes before the break.

Liverpool responded well after the interval and turned the game on its head thanks to an Andrew Robertson equaliser and an own goal from Alphonse Areola.

However, man-of-the-match Bowen stepped up and floated a delicious delivery into the danger zone for Michail Antonio to power West Ham back on level terms 12 minutes from time, with both sides eventually settling for a share of the spoils.

Bowen equals two West Ham scoring records

Bowen’s first-half opener against Liverpool was his 16th Premier League goal of the season, equalling Paolo Di Canio’s record for the most goals scored by a West Ham player in a single season in the division.

Hammers legend Di Canio, who spent three-and-a-half years at the East London club, enjoyed his best scoring season in 1999-00 when he found the net 16 times in 30 top-flight appearances.

Bowen can break Di Canio’s record outright if he scores at least once in any of West Ham’s final three league games of the season against Chelsea, Luton Town or Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Bowen’s latest strike was also his third in as many games against Liverpool this season, having previously netted in a 3-1 Premier League loss at Anfield in September and a heavy 5-1 away defeat in the EFL Cup three months later.

The only other West Ham player in history to score in three different matches against Liverpool in the same campaign is 1966 World Cup winner Hurst, who scored in three separate games during the 1964-65 season.

Moyes sets goalscoring target for Bowen

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, West Ham manager David Moyes said: “They were really good goals. I enjoyed them. Jarrod [Bowen] is in goalscoring form. Congratulations to him on 20 goals in all competitions.

“I think it is a long time since someone has done that at West Ham. He is a fantastic player. I hope he keeps going.

On Bowen equalling Di Canio’s Premier League scoring feat, Moyes added: “That is where I’d like the 20 goals, I’d like them to be 20 Premier League goals. I’ve got something for him to chase in the last three games.”

West Ham’s draw against Liverpool leaves them sitting eighth in the Premier League table, one point behind seventh-placed Newcastle United who have two games in hand at the time of writing.

Bowen will endeavour to get his name on the scoresheet once again when the Hammers travel to Stamford Bridge to face London rivals Chelsea next Sunday.
