How Liverpool could line up against Sheffield United

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Liverpool could line up for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has lost another defender to injury ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The Reds emerged victorious from a seven-goal thriller with Fulham on Sunday, although Joel Matip was forced off midway through the second half at Anfield due to a knee injury.

Klopp has admitted that the Cameroonian centre-back faces a while on the sidelines, where he will be kept company by Alisson Becker (thigh), Diogo Jota (muscle), Andrew Robertson (shoulder), Thiago Alcantara (hip) and Stefan Bajcetic (calf) this week.

Matip has often kept Ibrahima Konate at bay in the Premier League this season, but the Frenchman will now have the chance to nail down his rightful place at the back, where Virgil van Dijk will join him in front of stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

On the back of scoring a sensational winner at the weekend, Trent Alexander-Arnold will bomb down the right as ever, but Joe Gomez is in contention to displace Kostas Tsimikas in the left-back role.

The same can be said in midfield, where Curtis Jones‘s fresh legs may be preferred over Ryan Gravenberch, but Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister – who scored a goal-of-the-season contender on Sunday with a 30-yard piledriver – should reprise their roles.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz are primed to continue on the wings too, but Darwin Nunez flattered to deceive in front of goal against Fulham, so Cody Gakpo should gear up for a return to the first XI.

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz
