Erik ten Hag future: Will Man United meeting lead to Dutchman being sacked?

How have the Manchester United board decided to act after holding a meeting on Tuesday which would have included discussions over the future of head coach Erik ten Hag?

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United are reportedly yet to reach a decision over the future of Erik ten Hag.

Although the Dutchman was handed a one-year contract extension in the summer, it has never been deemed that his position in the dugout is safe.

A scrappy 1-0 win over Fulham in the opening game of the new Premier League campaign failed to give Ten Hag the lift-off that he required to safeguard his future.

In the nine matches in all competitions that have followed, the Red Devils have only recorded victories over Southampton and Barnsley respectively.

Ten Hag needed to avoid defeats at Porto and Aston Villa before the October international break, that being achieved through 3-3 and 0-0 draws respectively.

Nevertheless, despite Ten Hag remaining defiant throughout, he was left to dwell over his future when a meeting between key figures behind the scenes took place on Tuesday.

What happened at the meeting?

The meeting was nothing out of the ordinary, it being a regular occurrence involving the executive committee with Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading the discussions.

According to The Guardian, it was held at INOES’s offices in London with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth also present.

However, no major decisions are said to have been taken, that becoming apparent with no development over Ten Hag’s future occurring in the hours afterwards.

That said, it is claimed that Ten Hag is still at risk of being removed from his position in the dugout over the coming days while he takes a holiday during the first part of the international break.

What next?

The report adds that assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy is most likely to take over on a caretaker basis if Ten Hag is sacked.

As it stands, he is currently preparing for the Premier League encounter at home to Brentford on October 19, United requiring a two-goal victory to overtake their 11th-placed opponents.

After seven matches, United have endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, collecting just the eight points.
