Championship club Sunderland to rival Premier League clubs for former star?

Sunderland are reportedly open to the idea of re-signing one of their former star players during the January transfer window.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Sunderland are allegedly open to the possibility of signing Jordan Henderson during the January transfer window.

As many as 13 years have passed since Henderson left the Stadium of Light to sign for Liverpool having initially come through the academy system.

Henderson made a total of 79 appearances for the Black Cats before going on to become a legend at Anfield, famously lifting the Premier League trophy in 2020.

However, despite going on to feature on 492 occasions for the Merseyside giants, Henderson’s career has taken a downward turn of late having made the decision to move to the Saudi Pro League in 2023.

The transfer was heavily criticised at the time due to Henderson having previously showed his support for the LGBTQ+ community, the opposite view shared in Saudi Arabia.

Having ultimately ended his time in the Middle East after six months, the 34-year-old has been with Ajax since the turn of the year.

Henderson Ajax exit a possibility?

Henderson did hope to kick-start the twilight stage of his career in Amsterdam, but the move contributed to him losing his place in the England squad.

As well as injury, Henderson has also only made 23 appearances for Ajax in all competitions under two different managers.

While Henderson has generally started the majority of games under Francesco Farioli, he only made the substitutes’ bench for the most recent Eredivisie fixture.

According to The Sun, there is growing interest in England regarding trying to negotiate a deal for Henderson, including from Sunderland.

Now with Regis Le Bris in charge, the North-East outfit have been outstanding in this season’s Championship, accumulating 19 points from nine games.

The report suggests that Sunderland and other second-tier teams may be prepared to consider a loan approach if Henderson could get around any issues regarding tax regulations.

That played its part in preventing Henderson from re-signing for an English club in January, so soon after his departure from Liverpool.

Would Ajax consider Henderson exit?

Having played for 810 minutes across 11 appearances in all competitions this season, Henderson appears to be a valued member of the squad.

Nevertheless, much may depend on if Ajax would prefer to get Henderson’s wages off their outgoings, even though a wide array of sales were conducted during the previous transfer window.

Henderson possesses a contract at Ajax until the end of 2025-26.
