Man United transfer news: Ten Hag hints attacker will stay at club this summer

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag suggests that struggling forward Antony will not be leaving Old Trafford this summer.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag remains “convinced” that Antony is good enough to represent the Red Devils, with the forward seemingly set to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

The 24-year-old made the move to the 20-time English champions from Ajax in 2022, but a difficult spell has seen him manage just 11 goals and five assists in 82 appearances in all competitions.

Antony struggled last term, scoring just once in 29 Premier League appearances, while he managed only three goals and two assists across the entire campaign for the Red Devils.

There has recently been speculation surrounding Antony’s future, with a recent report claiming that Man United may be willing to let him leave on loan during this summer’s transfer window.

However, Ten Hag has hinted that Antony will remain a part of the first team next season, with the Dutchman “convinced” that the Brazilian can finally make his mark after a difficult start to his Old Trafford career.

Ten Hag backs Antony to overcome his troubles

“I am still convinced that Antony has the potential to play at this club,” Ten Hag told AD. “He certainly showed that potential in the first month.

“He scored three times in his first three games. After that it became more difficult, last season was not good.”

Antony is back in pre-season training with Man United, as he was not a part of the Brazil squad at the Copa America, but he has missed their friendly matches against Rosenborg and Rangers.

The forward is expected to head to the United States on their pre-season tour next week, though, and he will be given opportunities to make his mark in the final third of the field.

Antony only scored one Premier League goal last season

Antony also had off-the-field issues last season, with the forward given a leave of absence by Man United to deal with serious allegations made against him.

His former partner, Gabriela Cavallin, accused the forward of assaulting her on multiple occasions during their relationship, with the most serious incident said to have occurred in a Manchester hotel room.

Antony has continued to deny any form of physical abuse, though, and he was not suspended by Man United, nor has he been arrested or charged by the police.

Towards the end of last year, the South American conceded that his relationship with Cavallin was “tumultuous” but firmly denied the allegations of physical abuse.

Ten Hag has also revealed that Man United want to keep hold of Scott McTominay this summer amid the speculation surrounding the Scotland international’s future.
