Mason Greenwood update: Man United forward ‘closing in’ on £26.7m exit

Manchester United reportedly reach an agreement with a foreign club to sell 22-year-old forward Mason Greenwood for £26.7m this summer.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with a foreign club to sell Mason Greenwood this summer.

The 22-year-old has returned to the Red Devils after spending last season on loan at La Liga outfit Getafe, where he recorded 10 goals and six assists in 33 league appearances.

Greenwood is understood to have held talks with Red Devils chiefs at their Carrington training complex on Monday, but the forward did not train with his teammates on their first day of pre-season.

The Englishman joined Getafe on a temporary basis after charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were all dropped last year.

Getafe have been keen to lure Greenwood back to Spain this summer on another loan deal, with the club’s president stating last month that ‘we hope to give good news soon’.

However, Greenwood has been linked with a host of other European clubs in recent weeks and one of those now appears to have struck a deal with Man United.

Marseille agree deal to sign Greenwood

According to multiple reports, including one from Sky Sports News, Ligue 1 club Marseille have agreed a deal worth £26.7m, plus add-ons, to sign Greenwood from Man United.

The report adds that the Red Devils have inserted a ‘significant’ sell-on clause into the deal, believed to be between 40% and 50%.

Man United academy graduate Greenwood, who joined the club’s youth system at the age of six, has now been given permission to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

A separate report from journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Greenwood has been offered a long-term contract until June 2029, and the forward has given the green light to make the switch to France.

Marseille are now managed by former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi, who has promised to ‘publicly defend’ Greenwood if he completes his permanent transfer to the French Riviera.

In stark contrast, the mayor of Marseille has publicly urged the city’s football club not to sign Greenwood, as he ‘does not want the club to be covered in shame’.

Greenwood has made a total of 129 senior appearances for Man United since and including his debut in 2019, and he last played for the club in January 2022 in a 1-0 EFL victory over West Ham United.
