A look at three clubs Man United’s Mason Greenwood could join this summer

Sports Mole looks at three clubs seemingly competing to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood this summer.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Mason Greenwood is highly unlikely to represent Manchester United again, with the forward expected to leave the Red Devils on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has not played for the 20-time English champions since January 2022.

Little over two years ago, the forward, following accusations from a woman, was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The Englishman was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the case against him was officially dropped last February.

Greenwood spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Getafe, scoring 10 goals and registering six assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, but he is now expected to leave Man United on a permanent basis.

Here, Sports Mole looks at three realistic candidates for the forward.

Marseille, who have recently appointed ex-Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach, have seemingly emerged as one of the favourites to sign Greenwood.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Marseille are one of two clubs, the other being Lazio, to make an offer for the Englishman this summer.

Discussions with the French outfit are allegedly ongoing, but it remains to be seen whether the club meet Man United’s asking price, which is believed to be in the region of £40m.

Marseille finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, so there will be no European football on offer in 2024-25, but the nine-time French champions will be confident of temping Greenwood to Stade Velodrome.

Lazio

Lazio, as mentioned above, have also allegedly made an offer for Greenwood, and the Italian outfit have been linked with his services for some time.

The club are thought to have been in the running to secure his signature last year, only for Getafe to agree a loan deal to bring him to Spain.

Lazio finished seventh in Serie A last season, meaning that they have qualified for the 2024-25 Europa League, which could see them take on Man United.

There have been suggestions that the Italian side are willing to pay around £17m for Greenwood, with a 50% sell-on clause being included in the agreement, but it is unlikely to be enough to convince Man United to sell.

Getafe

With Greenwood out of contract next year, it is not impossible to imagine him returning to Getafe on loan if a permanent sale cannot be agreed.

Man United will be looking to avoid that, as a sale would represent pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, but Greenwood is thought to be keen to return to Getafe.

The La Liga club’s president Angel Torres hinted at the end of June that the forward could be back with the capital outfit for the 2024-25 campaign.

“We have 15 in the squad plus Greenwood, who we hope to give good news about soon and I hope will stay another year,” he said. “As the press says, there are many offers and we will abide by what Man United say. It looks like he will continue for another year. Every day that passes there are more possibilities but you have to be cautious.”

As a result, a switch back to Estadio Coliseum cannot be ruled out, as Greenwood built a strong relationship with the supporters and players during his time at Azulones.
