Manchester United have announced that Erik ten Hag has extended his contract as head coach of the Red Devils until June 2026, adding 12 months to his previous deal.

Ten Hag’s future with the 20-time English champions was the subject of much debate due to the team’s struggles during the 2023-24 campaign.

Man United finished eighth in last season’s Premier League – their worst campaign in the current format – but they managed to win the FA Cup trophy at the end of May, which also saw them directly qualify for the group stage of the 2024-25 Europa League.

Following the conclusion of an end-of-season review, senior figures at Old Trafford, including new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, decided to keep Ten Hag at the helm.

The Dutchman’s previous contract had been due to expire next June, but the club have now announced that his deal has been extended until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” Ten Hag told the club’s official website.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.

“In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”

Ten Hag has won the EFL Cup and FA Cup since his arrival at Man United in the summer of 2022, but the Red Devils will be absent from next season’s Champions League due to their league struggles last term.

Man United’s new sporting director Dan Ashworth added: “With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes.

“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently.

“With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”

Man United will officially begin their pre-season on Monday, with the players not involved for their countries this summer due back at Carrington to start the preparations for the new campaign.

The Red Devils will tackle Rosenborg and Rangers in their opening two friendlies of the summer before heading to the United States for matches against Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool.
