Tottenham Hotspur make Cristian Romero decision after Real Madrid ‘contact’

Tottenham Hotspur allegedly have no interest in allowing Cristian Romero, who has been linked with Real Madrid, to leave the club.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Tottenham Hotspur allegedly have no interest in allowing Cristian Romero to leave the club this summer amid suggestions that Real Madrid are keen on his signature.

Los Blancos are thought to have identified the Argentina international as a possible signing this summer, with Carlo Ancelotti‘s side exploring the centre-back options in the current market.

Romero made the move to Tottenham from Atalanta BC in 2021, and he has represented the club on 98 occasions in all competitions, scoring six times in the process.

The 26-year-old has a contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until June 2027, but there have been claims that he could be on his way out of the capital giants this summer.

Real Madrid have allegedly been in touch with Romero’s representatives to register their interest in bringing him to the Spanish capital before the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Tottenham ‘not prepared to let Romero leave’

However, according to football.london, Spurs have no interest in entering into discussions with the La Liga and European champions over a transfer.

The report claims that Tottenham are not willing to let any key players leave this summer, as they bid to make a top-four challenge once again in the Premier League next season.

Romero was again an important player for Ange Postecoglou‘s side during the 2023-24 campaign, making 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring five times in the process.

The Argentine featured on 33 occasions in the Premier League, while he also played the full 90 minutes of his side’s 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Why do Real Madrid want another centre-back?

There has still not been a firm decision on Nacho‘s future, but it does appear that the Spaniard will be leaving Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Antonio Rudiger was a vital player for Real Madrid last season, but both Eder Militao and David Alaba missed a lot of football due to serious knee injuries.

Militao returned towards the end of the campaign, but Alaba will not be back until later this year, and if Nacho leaves, there will be a clear need for a new centre-back.

Aurelien Tchouameni can play in that position, but he is the first choice for the holding midfield spot, and with Toni Kroos retiring this summer, he will take on even greater importance in the middle.

Real Madrid will seemingly have to look elsewhere, though, with Tottenham allegedly not willing to entertain any transfer talks for Romero, who is currently with the Argentina squad at the 2024 Copa America.
