How Romania could line up against Ukraine

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Romania could line up for Monday’s Euro 2024 clash with Ukraine.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Back at a major tournament after eight years of waiting, Romania get their Euro 2024 campaign under way on Monday afternoon, when they meet Ukraine in Munich.

The Tricolorii arrived in Germany as unbeaten winners of their qualifying group, but they scored only one goal in friendly draws against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Liechtenstein this year and are struggling to select someone to spearhead their attack.

Following an injury scare that saw him sidelined last week, Denis Alibec has returned to full training, and the Qatar-based striker can battle it out with George Puscas and Denis Dragus for a place in the starting XI.

Head coach Edward Iordanescu also has a quandary to resolve in goal, as Atletico Madrid’s Horatiu Moldovan has not played any club football since moving to Spain in January; therefore, 36-year-old Florin Nita could be handed a start against Ukraine.

With Olimpiu Morutan ruled out of the Euros by a serious knee injury, Iordanescu’s selections out wide seem more straightforward: both set to represent Parma in Serie A following the Gialloblu’s promotion last term, Valentin Mihaila and Dennis Man should feature on the left and right respectively.

Meanwhile, in midfield, captain Nicolae Stanciu remains one of his nation’s main goal sources despite a rather nomadic club career – the 31-year-old currently plays for Damac in the Saudi Pro League.

Likely to line up in a flat back four, Romania’s defence is helmed by Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Radu Dragusin, who has yet to make his mark in the Premier League after an impressive spell with Genoa.

Romania possible starting lineup: Nita; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; M. Marin, R. Marin; Man, Stanciu, Mihaila; Dragus
