How Ukraine could line up against Romania

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Ukraine could line up for Monday’s Euro 2024 clash with Romania.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Quarter-finalists three years ago, Ukraine kick off their Euro 2024 campaign on Monday afternoon, when they meet Group E rivals Romania in Munich.

Serhiy Rebrov‘s side eked through the playoffs by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina and then Iceland, before experiencing a series of mixed results in recent friendlies as different lineups were tried out.

Penciled in to be a certain starter at the Euros, Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko only recently returned to fitness but has now suffered an ankle injury and will miss his nation’s opening game at least.

Fellow Premier League player Oleksandr Zinchenko is set to switch from midfield as cover, so either Mykola Shaparenko or Genoa’s Ruslan Malinovskyi could join Taras Stepanenko and rising star Heorhiy Sudakov in the Ukrainian engine room.

Both known for direct running and skill on either wing, Mykhailo Mudryk and Viktor Tsygankov should also feature against Romania, although captain Andriy Yarmolenko is also in contention – the latter needs just three more goals to surpass Andriy Shevchenko‘s all-time national record.

Meanwhile, up front, Girona’s Artem Dovbyk will see off the challenge of another Spain-based striker, Roman Yaremchuk, after finishing his debut campaign in La Liga as top scorer with 24 goals.

Overcoming the disappointment of missing out on a place in Real Madrid’s starting XI for the Champions League final, Andriy Lunin is Ukraine’s undisputed number one.

Ukraine possible starting lineup: Lunin; Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Zinchenko; Shaparenko, Stepanenko, Sudakov; Tsygankov, Dovbyk, Mudryk
