Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha opens door to Manchester United move

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha seemingly fails to rule out the possibility of joining Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United have seemingly been handed a boost in their alleged efforts to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new striker with Anthony Martial leaving the club once his contract expires at the end of June.

Head coach Erik ten Hag already has Marcus Rashford to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund, but the Dutchman generally prefers to use both players in the same team.

As a result, United are expected to acquire the services of another attacker during the summer transfer window, potentially one who is versatile due to their need to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Soon after the end of the season, it was claimed that United’s footballing operations team had identified Cunha as one of their top targets for the final third.

In response while back home in Brazil, Cunha responded by reiterating his happiness at Molineux and desire to build on a strong 2023-24 campaign.

Cunha ‘honoured’ to be linked with Man United’

However, the 25-year-old has since indicated that he would be prepared to consider a transfer to the Theatre of Dreams should it become a realistic possibility.

Speaking on a live social media video with friends, Cunha said: “You know it’s a real honour to have your name linked to Manchester United. One of the biggest clubs in the world. But I’m happy at Wolves.

“If I’m lucky, I play another good season, but the window is open, you never know.”

Wolves are in a strong position when it comes to trying to retain Cunha’s services with three years still remaining on his contract.

Would Wolves consider Cunha sale?

Cunha showed through his form during 2023-24 that he is genuinely happy with life at Wolves, contributing 12 goals and seven assists from 32 appearances in the Premier League.

For the first time since 2020-21 with Hertha Berlin, Cunha was regarded as a key player having spent 18 months as backup at Atletico Madrid.

Nevertheless, while Wolves are in a stronger financial position than they were 12 months ago, the West Midlands outfit are expected to sell one of their key players over the coming months.

As it stands, Pedro Neto could be the player in question, yet that will be dependent on whether Wolves receive any notable proposals for the Portugal international.

With Wolves having paid £44m for Cunha and the player having enhanced his reputation, United would realistically be required to pay in the region of £60m should they wish to finalise a deal.
