Hamilton Academical have had a rollercoaster ride in the Scottish leagues in recent years, going from competing in the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21 to Scottish League One in 2023-24 and now back in the Scottish Championship this campaign.

Aiming to simply stay in the division this term, Hamilton have had a fair start in pursuit of that objective, sitting seventh in the table with nine points from nine outings.

Those results leave them four points clear of the bottom two, though the three teams below them have all played a game fewer, while they trail the top four by just five points.

John Rankin, who took over in June 2022, will be pleased with how his team have bounced back after a tough start to the season, where they only managed to win one of their first seven matches in all competitions.

They have since gone on to record three wins and two draws in the following eight games, though they have suffered defeats to Queen’s Park and Greenock Morton in their last two outings, a run they will be hoping to end here.

However, they will face a tough challenge in Falkirk, who are heading into this match sitting at the top of the Scottish Championship with 20 points from nine games.

The visitors are enjoying a phenomenal start to their first year back in the second division since being relegated in 2018-19, having earned their promotion from League One last year with a remarkable unbeaten season in which they won the league with 90 points from 36 fixtures.

After winning their first five league matches, John McGlynn‘s men saw their streak end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Raith Rovers on matchday six, but they quickly recovered with one win and two draws in their last three outings.

Falkirk’s strong start to the campaign has certainly raised their hopes of achieving back-to-back promotions and securing their return to the top division for the first time since 2009-10, and they will be looking to boost their chances even more with another win here.

The visitors have enjoyed this fixture in recent history, remaining undefeated in all of their last four visits, including wins in each of the last three meetings.

Team News

Fergus Owens has been ruled out for the entire 2024-25 season after the defender suffered a knee injury during Hamilton’s pre-season preparations.

Elsewhere, Rankin could decide to name a similar side to the one that has featured in a majority of Hamilton’s recent outings, with Oli Shaw continuing to lead the line.

As for Falkirk, Ross MacIver is yet to return to the team after sustaining an injury in the 5-2 defeat to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup at the end of September, meaning Gary Oliver is likely to keep his place in the starting lineup.

Having avoided any fresh injury concerns in recent outings, McGlynn could name a similar side to the one that has remained undefeated in their last three outings.

Hamilton Academical possible starting lineup:
Lyness; Maguire, Kilday, McGinty, Longridge; Martin, Barjonas; Smith, O’Hara, Henderson; Shaw

Falkirk possible starting lineup:
Hogarth; Adams, Graham, Henderson, McCann; Tait, Spencer; Miller, Nesbitt, Ross; Oliver
