Erik ten Hag future: Man United considering new move for Champions League winner?

Manchester United are reportedly open to rekindling their interest in a former target if they choose to sack head coach Erik ten Hag.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United are reportedly open to the possibility of rekindling their interest in a former managerial target.

Erik ten Hag‘s future at Old Trafford is currently a hot topic for debate with United having won just three of their 10 matches in all competitions this season.

The victories in question have been against Fulham, Southampton and Barnsley respectively, United having generally fallen short against teams of a similar or higher level.

On the back of last weekend’s 3-0 reverse at home to Tottenham Hotspur, it was perceived that the Dutchman has two matches to save his job.

United only scrambled a 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League after a late equaliser from Harry Maguire, and the showdown with Aston Villa on Sunday could now prove to be pivotal.

That is despite minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe indicating that he does not have the final say over whether Ten Hag remains at the helm or not.

Tuchel back in the frame?

According to the i, United’s footballing operations team are not against reopening discussions with Thomas Tuchel about replacing Ten Hag.

During the summer, it was well documented that INEOS were open to parting ways with Ten Hag until it became apparent that they were unable to attract any of their preferred candidates.

While Tuchel was in the frame, he had just ended a stint with Bayern Munich and was not necessarily eager to jump straight back into a new role.

Furthermore, it is claimed that there were disagreements over how much power the German would hold at the club in relation to transfers.

United have since progressed forward with five high-profile additions, two of them in Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt who were not regular starters for Tuchel at the Allianz Arena.

Would Tuchel jump at chance to manage United?

Tuchel has often spoken of his enjoyment during his time at Chelsea, a period in which he won the Champions League with the Blues in 2021.

There may theoretically be a desire to eventually manage a Spanish or Italian club in his career having never managed in La Liga or Serie A.

Nevertheless, the perception is that he would consider any chance to take over a high-profile club in England, the only realistic opportunity fitting that criteria being United.
