Does the much-criticised Harry Maguire have a long-term future at Man United?

Manchester United will allegedly take their time when it comes to the future of experienced defender Harry Maguire.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United will reportedly take their time when it comes to the future of Harry Maguire, with the Red Devils expected to wait for the season to unfold before addressing his situation at Old Trafford.

Maguire’s deal with the 20-time English champions is due to expire next summer, although the club do have the option to extend his contract for a further 12 months to take him until June 2026.

The 31-year-old has consistently been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent years, but he has remained with the club and is in manager Erik ten Hag‘s plans for the 2024-25 campaign.

Maguire was not involved against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday through injury, but he has made seven appearances at club level this term, including four outings in the Premier League.

The defender has also made the squad for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Porto and could potentially be recalled into the starting XI, having played the full 90 minutes against FC Twente last week.

Man United ‘will take their time on Maguire decision’

According to Football Insider, Man United will not rush a decision on Maguire, but the club are desperate not to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

As a result, a contract extension could be activated with a view to selling him next summer, but there is also a chance that he could be offered a new long-term deal at the club.

Maguire was strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, with West Ham United thought to have had an offer accepted for him.

However, the ex-Sheffield United youngster decided to reject a switch away in order to fight for his position, and he made 31 appearances last season, scoring four goals in the process.

What is the centre-back situation at Man United?

Man United signed two new centre-backs over the summer, with Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro arriving at Old Trafford, but the latter is yet to make his first-team debut for the club.

Indeed, Yoro fractured his metatarsal during pre-season and will not be back until the start of December, but he made a strong impression during his first two friendly appearances for the club.

De Ligt is currently first pick alongside Lisandro Martinez in the middle of the defence, while Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are also centre-back options for Ten Hag.

Lindelof’s contract is due to expire next year, though, and the Sweden international is expected to leave on a free transfer, while Evans is also unlikely to pen another deal at Old Trafford.
