Man City suffer Mateo Kovacic injury scare in Ipswich win

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola discusses Mateo Kovacic’s injury scare in Saturday’s 4-1 win over newly promoted Ipswich Town.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic suffered an injury scare in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town.

After beating Chelsea in their Premier League opener, Man City came from behind against Ipswich to make it two wins from two matches.

Sammie Szmodics opened the scoring for the Tractor Boys, before Erling Haaland scored either side of a Kevin De Bruyne effort to give Man City a 3-1 lead by the 16th-minute mark.

Haaland went on to wrap up his hat-trick in the 88th minute to wrap up a commanding victory, extending his side’s unbeaten home run to 31 Premier League matches.

While it was a successful outing for Pep Guardiola‘s side, they dealt an injury blow when Kovacic was forced off in the 50th minute.

Man City handed Kovacic injury scare

The Croatia international dropped to the ground following a collision with former Man City forward Liam Delap.

Kovacic received treatment on the pitch from Man City’s medical staff before he had to be replaced by John Stones.

Speaking about Kovacic after the game, Guardiola told reporters: “I didn’t speak with the doctors. I think it was a knock.

“I think it was a knock. Liam Delap, we know from here, is so aggressive with that. We have six, seven days until the next game and we will see if he can recover.”

Kovacic adds to Man City injury concerns

Kovacic has started all three of Man City’s competitive matches this season, deputising in the absence of Spain international Rodri.

The Euro 2024 winner has been struggling with a knock and is still waiting to make his first appearance of the 2024-25 season.

Guardiola will hope Kovacic and Rodri will be able to prove their fitness in time for Saturday’s away clash with Man City.

The PFA Player of the Year Phil Foden will also be looking to return to the fold after sitting out the win over Ipswich due to illness.

However, the Citizens will be without 21-year-old attacker Oscar Bobb, who is out for an extended period due to a leg injury.
