Liverpool transfer race: Reds ‘join race’ for Chelsea-linked forward

Liverpool reportedly join the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, who is also attracting interest from several other Premier League clubs, including Chelsea.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Liverpool have reportedly joined Chelsea in the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David.

The 24-year-old has racked up 87 goals in 187 competitive matches since he joined Lille from Gent in the summer of 2020.

Last season, the Lille forward netted 26 goals in 47 appearances, including 19 league goals to second in the scoring charts alongside Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette.

David has carried his fine form into the new campaign, having netted three goals in Lille’s first five matches in all competitions.

The striker’s impressive performances have ultimately led to speculation surrounding his future, especially as he has entered the final year of his current contract.

Liverpool enter David race

Chelsea are believed to be among David’s admirers, having identified him as a potential alternative to their top striker target Victor Osimhen.

The Blues may have to make a swift decision over whether to pursue a move, with Caught Offside reporting that the West London club are now facing competition from Liverpool.

Liverpool are believed to be keen to sign David before Friday’s transfer deadline, and they are willing to offer him a long-term contract of up to five years.

Although David is out of contract next summer, there is a belief that Lille will still demand €45m (£38.1m)to €50m (£42.3m) to part ways with the forward.

The report also claims that the Canada international is attracting interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa and Serie A side Napoli.

Do Liverpool looking for a strong finish to underwhelming summer

Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes is still waiting to make his first signing after enduring a difficult summer transfer window.

The Reds appeared to be on course to bolster their midfield with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, but the Euro 2024 ultimately decided to remain with his boyhood club.

While it remains to be seen whether they move for David, his signing would only bolster a forward line which already boasts an array of attacking talent.

Slot can currently call upon Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez as his main attacking options.

Theoretically, David could be brought in to compete with Jota and Nunez for the central striker role in Slot’s starting lineup.
