Man United transfer news: Ex-Chelsea star keen on Old Trafford move?

A former Premier League title winner with Chelsea is reportedly interested in signing for Manchester United.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso is reportedly interested in signing for Manchester United.

Alonso is on the market as a free agent having seen his two-year stint with Barcelona come to an end over the summer.

Across that period, the left-back made a total of 45 appearances for the Catalan giants, but just eight outings came during 2023-24.

Now 33 years of age, the former Spain international is now assessing the next phase of his career, aware that he may not get many more opportunities to join a high-profile club.

From the opposite standpoint, though, Alonso remains an attractive proposition and appears likely to remain an option to numerous such teams over the coming weeks.

Alonso “would love” Man United move

The best period of Alonso’s career came with Chelsea, contributing an outstanding 29 goals and 20 assists from his 212 outings in all competitions.

Having spent six years at Stamford Bridge, as well as a loan stint with Sunderland earlier in his career, Alonso feels at home in the Premier League.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Alonso would jump at the chance to sign for Man United should the Red Devils follow up their alleged interest.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Marcos Alonso would love to go to Manchester United. He has been offered to Manchester United in recent weeks, but there is nothing really concrete or advanced into it so far.

“I think Manchester United will take some time before deciding who the player they really want to cover that position is, and will save their budget, save their money, and put their effort into a deal for the midfield.”

What will Ten Hag likely do?

The left-back area has been a constant issue for Erik ten Hag for at least a year, a consequence of the injuries sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Noussair Mazraoui will provide cover in the absence of both, as will Diogo Dalot, while Lisandro Martinez is another player who can deputise when required.

Nevertheless, adding Alonso to the ranks may be a shrewd move given the amount of matches that United could play this campaign with the Europa League on their schedule.

Alonso is also capable of playing in the centre if required, while he also offers a threat from direct free kicks and height at both ends of the pitch.
