Man United transfer news: Galatasaray ‘in talks’ to sign midfielder

Galatasaray are discussing the potential transfer of a Manchester United midfielder, according to the Turkish side’s vice-president.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Galatasaray.

The 27-year-old has spent his entire career at Old Trafford, making 252 appearances in all competitions since being handed his debut by Jose Mourinho at the back end of the 2016-17 campaign.

A total of 29 goals and eight assists have been contributed during that time, McTominay proving to be a valuable squad member under an array of different managers.

As it stands, that is expected to remain the case for 2024-25 given that he netted 10 times in all competitions last season, yet his contract situation needs to be resolved.

McTominay has less than 12 months remaining on his contract, albeit with United possessing the option to extend his terms by an extra year.

Galatasaray ‘evaluating’ cost of McTominay deal

There is a scenario that could play out where United try to cash in on the Scotland international, rather than tie him down to a longer deal, as they look to shake up their squad.

Galatasaray’s vice-chairman Ibrahim Hatipoglu has suggested that the Turkish giants are attempting to take advantage of the situation, revealing to CNN Turk that negotiations are currently ongoing with the relevant parties.

Hatipoglu said: “We are interested in a player from the Premier League and Manchester United.

“There is nothing more natural than the high cost of this. There are discussions regarding his transfer fee. For us, the total cost, including transfer fees and player receivables [salary], is important at the decision point.

“Once the negotiations with both the club and the player are completed, the cost becomes apparent.”

Answering a different question with Haber Sari Kirmizi, Hatipoglu added: “McTominay’s transfer is being discussed.”

What is the potential fee for McTominay?

United have rejected offers in the region of £30m in the past, when McTominay has had more time remaining on his contract.

Although any potential suitors will point to that situation, the versatile midfielder just enjoyed his best-ever return in the Premier League in terms of goals.

There is an obvious benefit of the Red Devils retaining McTominay’s services due to his homegrown status. The flip side to that is that they can generate pure profit through a sale, and will not risk losing him on a free transfer.

Galatasaray are attempting to build a squad capable of fending off a Fenerbahce side now managed by Mourinho, who is said to have his own eyes on a Premier League midfielder.
