Man United ‘in no hurry’ to sell in-demand midfielder amid transfer talk

Manchester United are allegedly in no hurry to sell Scott McTominay this summer amid the speculation surrounding his future.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United are reportedly in no hurry to sell Scott McTominay this summer amid suggestions that a number of Premier League clubs are keen on his signature.

The Scotland international was strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford last year, with West Ham United and Fulham both believed to have been in contact with the Red Devils over a switch.

Ex-West Ham head coach David Moyes recently confirmed that he wanted to bring McTominay to the London Stadium, but the midfielder remained with Man United last term.

The 27-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2023-24 campaign for the Red Devils, scoring 10 goals and registering three assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.

McTominay managed seven goals and one assist in 32 Premier League outings, while he scored twice and registered one assist in six appearances in the FA Cup.

McTominay is being linked with a Man United exit

The midfielder has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, though, and there is currently speculation surrounding his future.

Man United are in the market for a new central midfielder this summer to play alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, while McTominay could find it difficult to earn minutes further forward next season, as Joshua Zirkzee is set to arrive from Bologna to support Rasmus Hojlund.

Fulham and Newcastle United are believed to be among the potential suitors, but according to Football Insider, the Red Devils are in no rush when it comes to a potential sale.

The report claims that West Ham could reignite their interest this summer, while Southampton are also believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation at Old Trafford.

Should Man United let McTominay leave?

Any sale of McTominay this summer would count as pure profit in the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, so a departure simply cannot be ruled out for both football and financial reasons.

It would be a risk to let the Scot leave, though, as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are both being linked with departures, and head coach Erik ten Hag would not want to leave himself short in such a key area.

If top target Manuel Ugarte arrives at the club from Paris Saint-Germain alongside another midfielder, then Man United can afford to let McTominay leave, but at the moment, it might be best to keep hold of him.

McTominay has scored 29 goals and registered eight assists in his 252 first-team appearances for the 20-time English champions since breaking into the first team.

There has been criticism of his technical abilities for some time, but his character and commitment to the cause simply cannot be called into question, and Man United should keep hold of him this summer unless a club makes an offer which simply cannot be refused.
