Decision on 27-year-old’s Man United future is ‘imminent’

Manchester United are allegedly close to making a final decision on the future of on-loan Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Manchester United are reportedly close to making a final decision on the future of Sofyan Amrabat.

The Morocco international moved to Old Trafford on loan from Fiorentina last summer, and he made 30 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2023-24 campaign.

Man United have the option to purchase the 27-year-old this summer, but there has still not been an official announcement from the club when it comes to his future.

According to the Manchester Evening News, a decision from the Red Devils is imminent, with Dan Ashworth‘s arrival as the new sporting director now being confirmed.

The report claims that head coach Erik ten Hag will speak with Ashworth, technical director Jason Wilcox and incoming chief executive Omar Berrada before a final decision is made.

Amrabat could remain at Old Trafford

Amrabat is still listed on Man United’s first-team website, indicating that he could stay, as Brandon Williams, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial are no longer listed, having been released.

Ten Hag is believed to be in favour of keeping the Moroccan at Old Trafford, as he did begin to show impressive form for the club in the latter stages of the 2023-24 campaign.

Amrabat is believed to have cost the Red Devils €10m (£8.6m) to loan, while the purchase option is thought to be worth €20m (£17.1m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons.

The midfielder started Man United’s final three Premier League matches of the 2023-24 campaign before also being given the nod for the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Ashworth expected to be heavily involved in Amrabat call

Amrabat was picked ahead of Casemiro to start alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in the FA Cup final, and Fiorentina’s sporting director Daniel Prade recently said that the midfielder was determined to remain in the Premier League.

“I would keep him in Florence but it doesn’t seem like what he has in mind,” Prade told reporters. “I think he wants to stay in the Premier League but we haven’t heard from anyone yet since.”

Donny van de Beek is certain to leave Old Trafford this summer, while Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are also being heavily linked with moves away from the club.

As a result, Amrabat could represent a smart signing for Man United, as he showed signs of adapting to English football towards the end of last season, and in a more structured team, the midfielder certainly has the skillset required to be a success for the club.
