England v Slovenia LIVE: Starting line-ups as Southgate makes single change of Gallagher for Alexander-Arnold

Gareth Southgate has decided that the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment hasn’t worked and makes one change to the England starting line-up.

The Liverpool man drops out of midfield with Conor Gallagher brought in to replace him.

Harry Kane said there is no reason why he, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham can’t produce their club form together in an England shirt – but just believes they need to show more positional discipline.

Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw both took part in England training on Monday ahead of the side’s final Euro 2024 group match against Slovenia.

The left-back conundrum has already been a key problem for the England manager, but it now shows signs of easing. Luke Shaw was named in Southgate’s squad for the tournament as the only specialist in the position, but he was not even fit enough to be on the bench for the game against Denmark and had been training on his own.

With the way some of England’s squad are training, it doesn’t feel like the team are facing their most pressurised tournament since Euro 2016. Declan Rice says the team’s match-winners “look frightening, they look on it”.

The midfielder insists the camp is like “a bunch of kids at nursery”, such is the sense of “fun”. “We’re all playing different games – Uno, basketball, padel. We are having a lot of fun off the pitch.”

Declan Rice meanwhile added that the team’s “connections all over the pitch” have been lacking, with the press not right.

A difficult night against Denmark did put England into the last 16, but with the tepid nature of the performance putting huge pressure on the side. Southgate said he’s “not going to hide from the realities” as he spoke in detail about how fitness issues have ensured he is working under “limitations”.

England take on Slovenia in Cologne tonight with their place in the last-16 already secure following the result on Monday. The Three Lions’ progress was wrapped up thanks to Spain’s 1-0 over Albania meaning, at worst, they will be one of the best third place teams.

Gareth Southgate’s men sit top of Group C having taken four points from the opening two games but a lacklustre performance in the 1-1 draw with Denmark changes are expected to the starting XI.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is expected to make his first start of Euro 2024 replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold as England search for a win that would result in a top spot finish.

“I’ve watched Slovenia, their first two group games, and they’ve actually been really, really good,” Declan Rice said about facing Slovenia tonight.

“They have a lot of strong players, really fast. Obviously the main talking point, (Benjamin) Sesko, the boy who plays up front. He’s been a massive target for clubs around Europe.

“Tomorrow is going to be really tough. When you play teams like Slovenia, you know what you are going to get. They are going to come at us, they are going to want to win the game, they are going to want to shock the world.”
