England v Slovenia LIVE: Starting line-ups as Southgate makes single change of Gallagher for Alexander-Arnold

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer respond to Harry Kane’s ‘not won anything’ jibe after criticism

England look to immediately bounce back from a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark last week as they face Slovenia in their final group game at Euro 2024 tonight.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Gareth Southgate’s side sit top of the group on four points, knowing that a win will take them through in first place and straight to a last-16 tie in Gelsenkirchen on 30 June. But before them stands a plucky Slovenia side who were unlucky not to beat Serbia in their most recent group game. Having drawn their first game to Denmark, they sit on two points and know that a win (and perhaps even a draw) will see them into the round of 16.

The Three Lions have put themselves in a decent position in the group, but the pressure is on as nothing other than a win – and perhaps one that reminds us of their previous billing among the tournament favourites – will be enough for many back at home.

England team changes

Gareth Southgate has decided that the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment hasn’t worked and makes one change to the England starting line-up.

The Liverpool man drops out of midfield with Conor Gallagher brought in to replace him.

Harry Kane reveals how to fix problem plaguing him, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden at Euro 2024

Harry Kane said there is no reason why he, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham can’t produce their club form together in an England shirt – but just believes they need to show more positional discipline.

England receive big fitness boost ahead of Slovenia Euro 2024 test

Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw both took part in England training on Monday ahead of the side’s final Euro 2024 group match against Slovenia.

The left-back conundrum has already been a key problem for the England manager, but it now shows signs of easing. Luke Shaw was named in Southgate’s squad for the tournament as the only specialist in the position, but he was not even fit enough to be on the bench for the game against Denmark and had been training on his own.

England desperately search for reset button in match that will define their tournament

With the way some of England’s squad are training, it doesn’t feel like the team are facing their most pressurised tournament since Euro 2016. Declan Rice says the team’s match-winners “look frightening, they look on it”.

The midfielder insists the camp is like “a bunch of kids at nursery”, such is the sense of “fun”. “We’re all playing different games – Uno, basketball, padel. We are having a lot of fun off the pitch.”

The young stars are out at Euro 2024 as football’s next era arrives

Zinedine Zidane didn’t get this before dominating Euro 2000, when he was 28. Despite that gap, Musiala is being seen in similar terms to the French great then, at least as far as an individual European Championships goes. That is as the potential player of the tournament.

Who is to blame for Scotland’s Euro 2024 failure? Star players, squad players and the manager

So Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign peaked before the football began. While the Scottish hordes endeared themselves in Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart, the Scottish team laboured and floundered: wretched against Germany, industrious against Switzerland, impotent against Hungary.

There was a hard-luck story in the penalty that wasn’t but it is hard to claim a side with three shots on target in the entire group and two goals – one a bizarre own goal, another a deflection – ought to progress.

Which leaves the images of John McGinn’s attempts at Bavarian country dancing as the moment that seemed to sum up much that is right about his country: no Scotland, no party, and if the party involves three knee-slapping locals in distinctly unusual hats, then McGinn was going to join in.

England’s biggest problem is the press. Here’s why it’s not working

Declan Rice meanwhile added that the team’s “connections all over the pitch” have been lacking, with the press not right.

A difficult night against Denmark did put England into the last 16, but with the tepid nature of the performance putting huge pressure on the side. Southgate said he’s “not going to hide from the realities” as he spoke in detail about how fitness issues have ensured he is working under “limitations”.

England vs Slovenia

England take on Slovenia in Cologne tonight with their place in the last-16 already secure following the result on Monday. The Three Lions’ progress was wrapped up thanks to Spain’s 1-0 over Albania meaning, at worst, they will be one of the best third place teams.

Gareth Southgate’s men sit top of Group C having taken four points from the opening two games but a lacklustre performance in the 1-1 draw with Denmark changes are expected to the starting XI.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is expected to make his first start of Euro 2024 replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold as England search for a win that would result in a top spot finish.

Rice on facing Slovenia

“I’ve watched Slovenia, their first two group games, and they’ve actually been really, really good,” Declan Rice said about facing Slovenia tonight.

“They have a lot of strong players, really fast. Obviously the main talking point, (Benjamin) Sesko, the boy who plays up front. He’s been a massive target for clubs around Europe.

“Tomorrow is going to be really tough. When you play teams like Slovenia, you know what you are going to get. They are going to come at us, they are going to want to win the game, they are going to want to shock the world.”
