How Switzerland could line up against Germany

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Switzerland could line up for Sunday’s Euro 2024 clash with Germany.

SURE ODDS BANNER

After taking four points from their first two fixtures at Euro 2024, Switzerland meet tournament hosts Germany in Frankfurt on Sunday evening, when a point would ensure progress to the knockout phase.

Held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland in midweek, Die Nati must now step up in class when locking horns with their formidable neighbours, so a slightly more cautious approach could be on the cards.

While Murat Yakin is set to name a similar side to that which started against Scotland, it remains to be seen whether Xherdan Shaqiri will be retained in an attacking midfield role – despite scoring for the sixth successive major finals.

Particularly if Breel Embolo is selected to make his first international start since a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury, the more mobile Dan Ndoye and Ruben Vargas could instead be chosen to support the lone striker this weekend.

Elsewhere, the Swiss spine should remain the same: Yann Sommer in goal, Manuel Akanji helming the back three, and captain Granit Xhaka earning his 128th cap in central midfield.

The latter is generally joined by Bologna duo Remo Freuler and Michel Aebischer, plus Mainz 05 wing-back Silvan Widmer – one of several squad members that play in Germany’s Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, Embolo’s Monaco teammate Denis Zakaria missed out on the first two matches with a thigh problem, but he may now be fit enough for selection as a substitute.

Switzerland possible starting lineup: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer; Ndoye, Vargas; Embolo
