France chief delivers Mbappe injury update ahead of Netherlands Euro 2024 clash

The president of the French Football Federation (FFF) delivers an injury update on Kylian Mbappe, who sustained a broken nose in France’s Euro 2024 Group D win over Austria.

SURE ODDS BANNER

The president of the French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed that Kylian Mbappe‘s Euro 2024 tournament is not over after the France captain broke his nose on Monday.

Mbappe started and set up the only goal as Les Bleus beat Austria 1-0 in their opening Group D fixture, with the attacker delivering a cross that Maximilian Wober headed into his own net.

Didier Deschamps‘s side were unable to double their advantage, and Mbappe was guilty of an uncharacteristic one-on-one miss midway through the second half, but France ultimately held on for three important points.

However, the contest ended painfully for Mbappe after he sustained a broken nose in the closing stages following a collision with Kevin Danso when attempting a header from a set-piece.

Mbappe was in notable discomfort and was seen covered in blood as he required treatment before eventually making his way down the tunnel.

Mbappe a doubt for Netherlands clash

Shortly after the match, the FFF confirmed that Mbappe has returned to France’s base camp and will receive treatment over the next few days, but his nose fracture will not require surgery.

They also revealed that the Real Madrid forward will be required to wear a protective mask in order to try to participate in the remainder of the tournament.

Austrian defender Danso has since taken to social media to apologise for his accidental involvement in the incident, posting on X: “To French supporters: I am sorry that Kylian Mbappe was injured during our duel.

“I wish him a good recovery and I hope he can quickly find his place on the pitch.”

Reports have since emerged stating that Mbappe is ‘likely’ to miss France’s next Euro 2024 group-stage match against Group C rivals Netherlands on Friday.

French president offers reassuring Mbappe update

However, FFF president Philippe Diallo has since reassured French supporters that Mbappe’s tournament is not over just yet.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Diallo said: “As you have seen, Kylian had this injury on the nose yesterday. The latest news is reassuring where there is no short-term operation needed, which was expected.

“Concerning his availability for the rest of the tournament, it’s a little early to give you a schedule and we will wait for the final verdict from the doctors’ tests this morning.

“Everyone came back a bit late last night so we will wait for later in the day to see how it evolves. But I will reiterate, the latest news is positive due to him not needing an operation. Him having his tournament taken away from him is not the case.”

France currently sit joint-top of Group C along with the Netherlands, who also won their opening group fixture, beating Poland by a 2-1 scoreline.

Should Mbappe miss France’s clash with the Netherlands, Olivier Giroud or Randal Kolo Muani could be tasked with leading the line for Deschamps’s side.
