Scotland suffer huge Euro 2024 suspension blow for Switzerland clash

Scotland defender Ryan Porteous is set to miss his side’s second Euro 2024 clash with Switzerland after being sent off in Friday’s encounter with Germany.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Scotland have been dealt an early Euro 2024 suspension blow, as one of Steve Clarke‘s key defenders is set to miss their clash with Switzerland on matchday two.

The Tartan Army’s Allianz Arena party was brought to a standstill inside the opening 45 minutes of their Group A clash, where Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz propelled the Germans into a 3-0 lead.

The latter struck from the penalty spot after Ryan Porteous caught Ilkay Gundogan with a horrendous tackle inside the box, having tried to stop the Barcelona man from latching onto a rebound after his header was saved by Angus Gunn.

In doing so, however, Porteous flew in with both studs off the ground and caught Gundogan on the ankle with his studs, although Clement Turpin initially let the phase of play continue before checking the monitor.

The referee did not take long to blow for a penalty and brandish a straight red card for Porteous, who is therefore suspended for Scotland’s next match against Switzerland on June 19 in Cologne, but his punishment could be upgraded.

Grant Hanley, Liam Cooper and Scott McKenna all represent alternative options for Clarke in the heart of the backline alongside Kieran Tierney and Jack Hendry.
