How Slovenia could line up against Denmark

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Slovenia could line up for Sunday’s Euro 2024 Group C clash with Denmark.

SURE ODDS BANNER

All eyes should be on RB Leipzig hotshot Benjamin Sesko when Slovenia open their Euro 2024 campaign against Denmark on Sunday in Group C.

The 21-year-old scored in each of his last seven Bundesliga games of the season and was being tracked by Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United before committing to a new deal at the Red Bull Arena.

Also scorer of five goals in qualifying to help end Slovenia’s 24-year absence from the top continental tournament, Sesko should form a two-man strikeforce at the MHPArena, where Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek should employ a 4-4-2 system.

Former Atalanta BC forward Josip Ilicic – back from a two-and-a-half year national team exile – is certainly an option to partner Sesko, but Andraz Sporar is expected to be given that responsibility instead.

The Slovenians do have a couple of fitness concerns out wide, as Benjamin Verbic did not complete Wednesday’s training session in full, while Petar Stojanovic could not play in either warm-up friendly due to a muscular issue.

The latter has now recovered but should lose out to Tomi Horvat due to his lack of match practice, while Jan Mlakar – who assisted Sporar’s strike in the recent 1-1 draw with Bulgaria – is expected to be given the nod on the left.

Sporar’s Panathinaikos teammate Adam Gnezda Cerin is primed to join Timi Elsnik as the midfield pairing, while Miha Blazic and Jaka Bijol shield Jan Oblak with support from Zan Karnicnik and Erik Janza.

Slovenia possible starting lineup:
Oblak; Karnicnik, Blazic, Bijol, Janza; Horvat, Gnezda Cerin, Elsnik, Mlakar; Sesko, Sporar
