Tottenham Hotspur ‘plotting move’ for Bundesliga defender

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping tabs on Stuttgart’s Hiroki Ito after identifying the Japan international as a potential target.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Stuttgart defender Hiroki Ito.

The Japan international initially joined Stuttgart on a loan deal in 2021, before his move was converted into a permanent transfer in the following summer.

Ito has made 97 competitive appearances during his time with the German club, chipping in with two goals and five assists.

The 25-year-old was featured in 26 Bundesliga matches last season, helping Stuttgart pip Bayern Munich to second place.

Ito was ultimately part of a backline that conceded just 39 goals in 34 league matches – only champions Bayer Leverkusen conceded fewer goals in the 2023-24 season.

Tottenham considering Ito move

Having proven to be a consistent performer for Stuttgart, Ito is now attracting interest from the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Sport Bild, Tottenham are keeping tabs on the Japanese player as they weigh up whether to make a summer move.

Although Ito is under contract until June 2027, he is believed to have a release clause in the region of €30m (£25.6m).

Even if they decide to trigger the player’s release clause, Spurs would have to convince Ito to leave a club that is set to play in the Champions League next season.

Tottenham only have Europa League football on the table after finishing in fifth spot and two points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Why are Spurs considering Ito?

Spurs have seen their defensive options reduced by the departures of Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon.

Emerson Royal could depart amid interest from AC Milan, while there is also uncertainty surrounding Sergio Reguilon‘s future.

As a result, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is seemingly keen to bolster their backline, and with Ito, he could strengthen a couple of positions with just one signing.

Ito proved to be a versatile asset to Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness during the 2023-24 campaign, splitting his time between playing a central defender and a left-back.
