Manchester United veteran ‘open to staying at club’

Experienced goalkeeper Tom Heaton is open to penning a new deal at Manchester United, according to a report.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Tom Heaton is reportedly open to penning a new deal at Manchester United despite not making a single appearance for the club during the 2023-24 campaign.

The 38-year-old is the number three goalkeeper at Old Trafford beyond Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, and he would therefore need both stoppers to be unavailable in order to feature for the Red Devils.

Heaton returned to Man United for a second spell in the summer 2021 following the expiration of his contract at Aston Villa, but he has made just three appearances for the club during that time.

The goalkeeper’s contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of June, and it is widely thought that the Englishman will leave on a free transfer in search of a new club, as he has no plans to retire.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Heaton is open to staying at Man United this summer despite being disappointed at his lack of action.

Tom Heaton ‘open to signing new Man United deal’

The report claims that Heaton, who was the subject of interest from Luton Town last summer, would be interested in becoming a coach at Old Trafford once his playing career is over.

Heaton started his youth career at Wrexham before moving to Man United in 2002, but he failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Red Devils and left permanently for Cardiff City in 2010.

The stopper has also represented Bristol City, Burnley and Villa since his departure from Old Trafford, with the majority of his football coming at Burnley between 2013 and 2019.

Heaton has been on the bench on 12 occasions for Man United this season, including in five of their six Champions League group-stage fixtures.

Which other Man United players are out of contract this summer?

Three more first-team players only have deals until the end of June, with one of those being Anthony Martial, who is set to end his long association with the club this summer.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans, meanwhile, could also both depart when their deals expire on June 30.

Man United decided against activating a one-year extension in Varane’s current deal, and the 31-year-old is likely to move on this summer in search of pastures new.

Evans has made 25 appearances for the Red Devils this season, but the 36-year-old has struggled with injury problems of late and could also depart after one campaign back at the club.

Man United must also make a decision on Sofyan Amrabat, who is on loan from Fiorentina, and it is understood that the club will not be taking up the option to sign him on a permanent basis.
