Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson ruled out of England duty

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe confirms Callum Wilson has withdrawn from England duty due to a hamstring injury.

SURE ODDS BANNER

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has been forced to withdraw from the England squad due to a hamstring injury.

Wilson has scored two goals in nine appearances for his country, but he has not played for England since September’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland.

After missing October’s international period due to injury, Wilson was recalled for England’s final two Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Wilson evidently impressed England boss Gareth Southgate after scoring seven goals in 10 Premier League appearances this season.

Despite being named his Southgate’s squad, his availability for the upcoming internationals was thrown into doubt when he picked up a hamstring injury in Newcastle’s Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Wilson was not included in the squad for Saturday’s 2-0 loss against Bournemouth, and Howe revealed after the game the 31-year-old will miss England’s upcoming matches.

The Newcastle boss told reporters: “Callum won’t travel with England. He’s going to be out for a number of weeks.”

News of Wilson’s withdrawal will come as a blow to Southgate, who has already seen Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison pull out of the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou recently confirmed Maddison has been ruled out until January 2024 due to an ankle injury.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is also set to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s squad with a shoulder problem.

After picking up the issue in last weekend’s goalless draw with Rayo Vallecano, Bellingham was not risked for the midweek Champions League victory over Braga.

Bellingham was expected to feature in Saturday’s home game against Valencia, but he was unable to make the squad for the 5-1 victory.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said after the match that Bellingham will travel to be assessed by England’s own medical staff, but he expects him to quickly withdraw from the squad.
